Best Books: Classics for LDS Homes --Celebrating some of the most beloved classics for women, each heirloom-quality volume is beautifully bound with a linen spine, gold leaf, and a ribbon marker. Elegant and refined, this exclusive collector's set makes a stunning gift or addition to your own home library. Includes:

Little Women: Timeless in its evocation of idealized family life and robustly enduring, Little Women is recognized as one of the best-loved classic children's stories of all time. Originally written as a "girls" story, its appeal transcends the boundaries of time and age, making it as popular with adults as it is with young readers. For this is a beguiling story of happiness and hope, of the joys of companionship, domestic harmony and infinite mother love, all seen through the life of the March family.
Pride and Prejudice: When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited; he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life.
Anne of Green Gables: As soon as Anne Shirley arrives at the snug white farmhouse called Green Gables, she is sure she wants to stay forever...but will the Cuthberts send her back to the orphanage? Anne knows she's not what they expected-a skinny girl with fiery red hair and a temper to match. If only she can convince them to let her stay, she'll try very hard not to keep rushing headlong into scrapes and blurting out the first thing that comes to her mind. This orphan girl dreams of the day when she can call herself Anne of Green Gables.
The Secret Garden: When orphaned Mary Lennox, lonely and sad, comes to live at her uncle's great house on the Yorkshire moors, she finds it full of secrets. At night, she hears the sound of crying down one of the long corridors. Outside, she meets Dickon, a magical boy who can charm and talk to animals. Then, one day, with the help of a friendly robin, Mary discovers the most mysterious wonder of all--a secret garden, walled and locked, which has been completely forgotten for years and years. Is everything in the graden dead, or can Mary bring it back to life?
Jane Eyre: Charlotte Bronte's impassioned novel is the love story of Jane Eyre, a plain yet spirited governess, and her employer, the arrogant, brooding Mr. Rochester. Published in 1847 under the pseudonym Currer Bell, the book heralded a new kind of heroine--one whose virtuous integrity, keen intellect, and tireless perseverance broke through class barriers to win equal stature with the man she loved.
Emma: In a novel remarkable for its sparkling wit and modernity, Austen presents readers with two of literature’s greatest comic creations—the eccentric Mr. Woodhouse and that quintessential bore, Miss Bates. Here, too, we have what may well be Jane Austen’s most profound characterization: the witty, imaginative, self-deluded Emma, a heroine the author declared “no one but myself will much like,” but who has been much loved by generations of readers. Delightfully funny, full of rich irony, Emma is regarded as one of Jane Austen’s finest achievements.
Sense and Sensibility: Forced to leave their home after their father's death, Elinor and Marianne must rely on making good marriages as their means of support. But unscrupulous cads, meddlesome matriarchs, and various guileless and artful women impinge on their chances for love and happiness.
The Scarlet Pimpernel: During the French Revolution's reign of terror, the mysterious Scarlet Pimpernel rescues helpless men, women, and children from their doom in this unique, wonderfully colorful adventure classic.
Being sixteen- a novel by Allyson B. Condie My Rediculous Romantic Obsessions Choke, a novel by Obert Skye

Being Sixteen, a novel by Allyson B. Condie:  “This is one of those books you can’t put down, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. My wish for this book is that every high school girl, her sisters, and their mom will read Being Sixteen and then get together and discuss what they’ve learned from it.” —Jack Weyland, author of Charly

The night of my sixteenth birthday, I didn’t even bother to make a wish when I blew out the candles on the cake. It was my sixteenth birthday, after all. My wishes had already come true. When you turn sixteen, you can start dating. And driving. And living. I counted the candles on my cake as the flames flickered in the summer breeze. I heard the cheers of my friends and family, and as I tasted cake and summer and the promise of good times to come, I thought, This is going to be a good year. Maybe the best year of my life. I had no idea.

Juliet Kendall has been looking forward to her sixteenth birthday for what feels like forever. At first, it seems like being sixteen will be as perfect as she dreamed—she has great friends, a cute almost-boyfriend, a spot on the varsity girls’ basketball team, and even a car of her own. But, as the year goes on, she discovers that her sister Carly is hiding a secret and realizes that, in fact, being sixteen may be her hardest year yet.

Being Sixteen is a coming-of-age story about two sisters and their different struggles. It addresses what it means to have a testimony, what it means to be a friend and a sister, and what’s involved in dealing with and overcoming an eating disorder.

Review by Katie Parker for the Association for Mormon Letters:
When Juliet Kendall turns sixteen, she has just about everything a faithful LDS girl might hope for: a strong family, a testimony, good friends, a spot on the varsity girls' basketball team, a driver's license, and a cute almost-boyfriend. To be honest, she knows she's good, she knows she's talented, she knows she's worked hard, and she knows she has a place in her loving and talented family. She does notice her younger sister Carly acting strangely on occasion, but overall Juliet's life is good--just as she has always expected it would be.

But then her life begins to crumble. Her almost-boyfriend just wants to be friends. The new basketball coach seems to have something against her and won't let her play much. And Carly's behavior--which is consistent with what little Juliet knows about bulimia--is getting difficult to ignore. As Carly's situation grows more desperate, and Juliet finally "betrays" her sister by telling their parents what she's been doing, the whole family is sucked into the storm.

Although Carly and her bulimia and emotional devastation now command center stage in the Kimball family, the story is still Juliet's. And her other trials with her friends and the basketball team would be tough enough to work through, but against the backdrop of Carly's illness and the new chaos in their home they become nearly insurmountable.

I've read many LDS books over the years that tell a good story and show interesting conflict, but in my opinion still fall short of honestly, gut-wrenchingly portraying real emotional effects of life's trials. Either the pain is glossed over, or "dealt with," or over-dramatized and then minimized quickly through a spiritual experience or two. That is not to say that all books I have read have fallen short, or that they haven't at least tried to show these things. It's one thing to be able to tell a good story, but it's another to convincingly show through written language those things that can really only be felt through the heart. But, bluntly speaking, my initial fear for this book was that after our perfect heroine's perfect life was established for the story, she might get banged up a little with the bulimia-sister thing, but she would still escape triumphant and relatively unscathed.

But as I read of Juliet's life unraveling, I was struck by how well Condie captures the struggles and the pain that Juliet experiences. Being Sixteen is a book that "gets it"--that life can be crushingly difficult sometimes, and things don't always fall right back neatly into place. Juliet took her belief in God for granted before, and saw His hand in her life when it went well. But what about when things don't go so well? What about when you've done all the right things and your world still falls down around you? Despite Juliet's fear that she has lost her own testimony and can't feel the Spirit, there are occasional rays of hope and lifelines cast to her that eventually do help her emerge-not as the carefree innocent she used to be, but as a new, reassembled, healing person.

My main criticism of the book is that a significant portion is spent establishing Juliet's original "perfect" life at the beginning. I believe this part of the story is important, as it establishes what Juliet believes to be her norm and what she initially expects her life to return to when the equilibrium is first broken. But because her life during this period is so idyllic, there is little conflict to pull the story along. There are a few cute vignettes showing homecoming and sending a care package to a sister who is serving a mission, but the story doesn't have much forward motion until Juliet's trials really begin about a third of the way through the book. I think this first section should have been tightened to bring us to the meat of the story sooner.

Still, I wholeheartedly recommend Being Sixteen, particularly to young adult readers and adults who work with youth. Bulimia is a significant issue in the story, and readers may learn some things about the condition that they didn't know before. But the larger issue is a story of a teenage girl who is forced to face challenges in her life, and how she changes in the process.
My Rediculous Romantic Obsessions, a novel by Becca Wilhite:  "A totally enjoyable, cute, and fast read." - TeensReadToo.com 5-star review

A perfect blend of wit, comedy, suspense, and, of course, romance.

This is NOT your typical romance novel.

Sarah Howard’s first year at the university is everything and nothing she expected—especially when a very cute boy named Ben in her Art History class starts to show interest in her.

Yes, this is a girl-meets-boy story, but the boy is totally hot while the girl is, at best, average. (Except for my wild, Medusa-curls. Ugh.) And yes, there is a misunderstanding, and a villainous outlaw, and a timely confession of love...well, okay, fine. It's totally a romance novel. But please note, there is no scantily-clad woman on the cover wilting into the arms of a muscular pirate; I'm not that kind of girl.

I'm a normal, everyday girl. And I can't understand why Ben - who is hot as a Greek god - wants to be my friend. Is it because we both play the guitar? Like the same flavors of ice cream? Laugh at the same jokes? Or does he want to hang around strictly so I'll help him with his homework? I hope not because I've been there, done that, and gotten burned. Not interested, thanks.

But I am interested in Ben. He's a real gentleman - a true romance novel here. (It's like Mr. Darcy signed up for my art history class.) Is it possible that this is the real thing? Or have my ridiculous, romantic obsessions gotten the best of me - again?
Choke, a fictional novel by Obert Skye:  Pillage was the first of three books in the fantasy adventure that Obert Skye calls a "Pillogy." Choke, the second, continues the eccentric adventures of Beck Phillips, who seems to have a knack for causing mischief in the secluded village of Kingsplot. In book one, Beck used his unique gift to unexpectedly hatch several dragon eggs. Thankfully, the dragons were destroyed ... or were they?

In Choke, a stranger has discovered that Beck Phillips is the key to finding and hatching a lost dragon's egg - a task that will bring the riches and fortune that Beck's family was destined to have. Beck learns that outward appearances can be deceiving and that grown-ups really do have valuable lessons to offer. Readers will laugh out loud at Beck's antics and sit on the edge of their seats while Beck and his friends confront Liz, the largest, most ferocious dragon Beck has ever seen!

The Golden Spiral, a novel by Lisa Mangum:  His eyes. His touch. His kiss. Dante was unlike anyone Abby had ever met. Now he’s gone, and Abby will do anything to get him back . . .

The hourglass door has closed behind Dante, sending him back in time to hunt down Zo, Tony, and V. Abby knows that Dante, as a Master of Time, is the only one who can stop them from destroying time itself. She also knows that he will need her help. But almost immediately, things start to change, and Abby’s worst fears are realized when Zo begins targeting her past specifically.

As Abby’s world fractures around her, she must face a terrible truth: either Dante didn’t make it through the door, or he is lost forever. So with Dante’s blueprints in hand, she begins construction on a new door, a new time machine that will either save Dante—or doom him.

With each new change that ripples into her present, Abby’s life continues to spiral out of control. Her relationships with Jason, Natalie, and even her family are threatened to the breaking point—and beyond. Zo’s power is greater than Abby ever imagined, but as she struggles to free Dante, she receives help from an unexpected—and unlikely—ally.

The bank is eroding. The barriers are thinning. And time is running out.

The Hourglass Door, a novel by Lisa Mangum in paperback:  Move over Edward; Dante is bound to eclipse you! — Emily Watts, bestselling author

In a time when copycats abound, Mangum has created a unique story with interesting characters and an intriguing plot. And because “Hourglass” centers on relationships, fantastical elements feel believable rather than, well, fantastical. — Deseret News

His past. Her future. Can love bring them together in time?

Abby’s senior year of high school is textbook perfect: She has a handsome and attentive boyfriend, good friends, good grades, and plans to attend college next year. But when she meets Dante Alexander, a foreign-exchange student from Italy, her life suddenly takes a different turn. He’s mysterious, and interesting, and unlike anyone she’s ever met before. Abby can’t deny the growing attraction she feels for him. Nor can she deny the unusual things that seem to happen when Dante is around. Time behaves differently when they are together—traveling too fast or too slow or sometimes seeming to stop altogether.

When the band Zero Hour performs at the local hangout, Abby realizes that there’s something dangerous about the lead singer, Zo, and his band mates, Tony and V. Oddly, the three of them are also from Italy and have a strange relationship to Dante. They also hold a bizarre influence over their audience when performing. And Abby’s best friend, Valerie, is caught in their snare.

Dante tells Abby the truth of his past: he once worked for Leonardo Da Vinci, helping to design and build a time machine. When Dante was falsely implicated as a traitor to his country, he was sent through the machine more than five hundred years into the future as punishment.

As the past and the present collide, Abby learns that she holds a special power over the flow of time itself. She and Dante must stop Zo from opening the time machine’s door and endangering everyone’s future. More than one life is at stake and Abby’s choice could change everything.

“The Hourglass Door has everything: a heroine who is genuine, strong, and lovable; an interesting and compelling love story; gorgeous language, fast pacing, and an intricate and exciting plot. For readers who have been waiting for the next book to sweep them off their feet — this is it.” — Allyson Braithwaite Condie, author of the Yearbook trilogy

This was a fun adventure to go on. Set during Abby's Senior year of high school. She is looking forward to college and little does she realize a mysterious boy will come in to her life and turn it upside down. I particularly enjoyed the writing and found the dialogue easy and natural. This book definitely left you wanting more.

Great books!, June 30, 2009

I got started reading this book while on a trip. My plane was delayed and at first I was irritated, but then I pulled out The Hourglass Door. The 2 hour delay went by in a flash as I was absorbed in the book. Lisa Mangum has done an excellent job. Others have given good descriptions of the plot, so I won't do that here; but let me just say that my only gripe is that I have to wait another year for the story to continue! Definitely recommended!

This is a great book!, May 11, 2009

Ok, so . . . I'm a guy. And guys aren't supposed to LIKE, let alone READ this kind of fiction book. Well, I haven't read TWILIGHT, but I did see the movie. However, I DID read THE HOURGLASS DOOR by Lisa Mangum. This is really a wonderfully creative story, and you really feel like to get to know and relate to the characters. Abby and Dante feel like real people, and I really cared about them and their growing relationship. I'm WAY out of high school age, but reading this story took me back to the emotions and experiences of that time. Lisa Mangum is a brilliant new writer, and I'm sharing this book . . . and her future books . . . with three of my daughters who love to read, and who love romantic fiction. I cannot tell you how MUCH I loved this book. Bravo, Lisa! I can't wait to read the next one!

Intriguing!, March 20, 2009
By Heather

Abby has always had a plan, and everything is running smoothly her senior year. She and her friends have applied to the state college together, her boyfriend takes her out every weekend like clock-work, and she even agrees to go bowling for her birthday—again—though she’s been doing it since she was four years old. Each day is predictable and Abby thinks that’s what she wants. Normal. Until Dante, an exchange student from Italy, arrives at her school. Things start to change and Abby realizes it’s because of Dante. She’s ready to take risks, ready to dream, and she realizes that things aren’t what they seem—especially Dante. He keeps a fascinating, yet deadly secret, and in order for Abby to survive, she’ll have to trust her heart, and Dante. From the first page, I was absorbed by this story. Abby is a witty character who hates her full name—Abigail Beatrice—until she discovers the role it might play. As she works at the assistant director on the play Much Ado About Nothing, then meets new student Dante, she begins to understand that classical literature transcends the parameters of time. Dante comes into the story as a mysterious character who seems only to pay attention to Abby—much to the dismay of the other girls in the school. But he has more reason than just a case of attraction—his dark secret will change Abby’s perception of life forever. A fascinating and highly creative story developed on connections between literature and time travel, I was impressed with Mangum’s debut novel. Just enough suspense, just enough intrigue, and of course romance, roll into one engaging read.
